Nathan had his two week checkup yesterday – he’s such a big boy now! Before seeing the doctor, we went to a group called Baby Club, which is a little class that Kaiser runs for new parents. There were about 6 or 7 babies plus parents, and a nurse to talk to us about not getting sleep (us) and pooping (the baby). Nathan was, of course, the most beautiful baby there. I also sucessfully changed his diaper on one of those bathroom tables while we were there, another first.
The first step at the checkup was the weighing, where they wanted to confirm that he’d regained his birth weight. As it turns out, Nathan is an overachiever, and weighed in at 8 pounds 9 ounces, a good 4 ounces over his birth weight! The doctor said he looks like he’s doing great, and we don’t have another appointment until he’s 2 months old, which I find mind-boggling. You mean they’re just going to trust him to us until then?
The doctor did show us a neat reflex I hadn’t heard of before, which is when you squeeze his palms, his mouth opens. A fun party trick if the baby is feeling cooperative. Nathan also cleverly picked the 30 seconds when his diaper was loose just after the exam to pee all over Jon’s lap. Fortunately, he didn’t have to go straight to work.
The picture is the evening of his 14th day, when he astounded us all by cheerfully playing with Jon for at least 45 minutes. As promised, though, he’s considerably fussier in the evenings now, and after dinner we had some upsetting meltdowns. But the expanded play time is a lot of fun, and once he settled to sleep the night feeding went pretty well. I still don’t know how I’m going to manage once my parents leave, though.
