We finally have our baby! This is Samuel William Pilat, born Jan 11th, 2009 at 10:57pm. He’s about an hour old in this picture, drying off from his first bath. We finally had to induce him, which worked even better than we’d hoped in spite of all our fears about going down that path again. After the birth, they put him onto my chest immediately for a cuddle and first nursing. It was absolutely incredibly how awake and alert he was for that first hour.
We arrived home from the hospital exactly 24 hours after he was born, and since then he’s met and charmed his Auntie Leigh, all four grandparents, and of course his big brother Nathan. Nathan is being incredibly, deeply sweet with Sam, while simultaneously making it clear that he’s a wee bit freaked out by all this. But I’m sure all the grandparently attention will help immensely, and he’s loving his first big brother gift of a super-cool car carrier which was immediately reassigned work as a logging truck carrying around lego tree trunks he constructed.
Oh, and the official measurements are:
weight: 3620 grams (just under 8 pounds)
length: 21 inches
head circumference: 36 centimeters
And I have no idea why they use that odd assortments of units for those measurements.
