Weekly wrap-up

A while ago, Grandma and Gramps gave Nathan a pogo stick.  Having inherited essentially no sense of balance from either side of the family, Nathan initially didn’t take to it too well.  However, Nathan’s friend Ren came over for a playdate the other day.  Apparently, Ren has an older brother who is a pogo stick expert.  With Nathan counting for him, Ren managed 56 hops.  With Ren’s coaching, Nathan managed 9.  I didn’t get his best run on video, but here’s a brief sample.

Last weekend, we went to Noah’s ninth birthday party at a children’s theater in San Francisco.  The kids improvised a brief play about passengers on a MUNI bus (Noah’s choice of setting, obviously.)  Each kid chose a character to play, got on the bus and exchanged a few words with the bus driver (played by Noah, obviously.)  Then the bus experienced an earthquake, so they all got on the emergency backup bus, then had a dance party.  Nathan was a hit as General Grievous.  Other notable characters included Cleopatra, and old man, and the queen of England with her dog.

Nathan practices his entrance.

Sam has been building some truly impressive things with the Magna-tiles this week.

This was a relatively early stage. It got even more impressive.

Sam’s preschool had a potluck to celebrate the 40th birthday of Palo Alto Community Childcare.  Ryan and I went, feeling a little guilty for not bringing anything, but there was way more food than necessary.  Ryan couldn’t stay long because she had to get to work, but I stayed until 10, mostly playing Star Wars and dinosaurs with Sam and his buddies.  They also gave all the kids PACC t-shirts.  They were very excited to get gifts.  The teacher threw the t-shirt to one of Sam’s friends who was sitting too far away to hand the shirt to him.  So Sam moved back so that she would throw his shirt to him as well.

Sam took posing for the group photograph very seriously.

This morning I volunteered to drive and chaperone Nathan’s class trip to the Cantor Art Center at Stanford.  I drove him and two of his friends, James and Adrian.  They insisted on all sitting together in the back row of seats in the van.  At the museum, we started out by eating lunch outside and then we wandered around the Rodin sculpture garden.

Nathan contemplates the art.

They especially enjoyed the Gates of Hell, particularly when they discovered they could walk around behind it, where there is a small, ordinary door.

Inside the museum, we had a very nice tour guide, who asked the kids lots of questions.

Nathan eagerly volunteers his opinion.

Being Nathan, he had some trouble restraining himself from leaping around more than is generally considered appropriate to an art museum.  At the end of tour, the guide told the group they had been a great group, but “a little peripatetic.”

By the end of the tour, Nathan was pretty tired.
