Tonight we took the boys to see Into the Woods, Jr. performed by teenagers at the Palo Alto Children’s Theater. The play itself suffers a lot in the alteration to the “Jr.” version – no second act, Rapunzel makes no sense without her prince, no tawdry hook-up between the Baker’s Wife and Cinderella’s Prince … But it was really fun and the boys liked it so much that as soon as it was over Sam announced that he wanted to see it again. So we went right home and bought tickets for next Thursday.
Sam also immediately noticed that the overall layout of the space – proscenium, balconies, etc. – was the same as it was last time when we went to see Goldilocks on Trial but that the set pieces were different. I got to explain to him how I teach people to build scenery and he seemed really interested, so I think I’ll have to find a time to bring them by a theater or two with me to look around backstage.
The Jr. version ends the same way the first act of the full version ends, with Cinderella wistfully saying “I wish …” Sam very astutely noticed that she seemed a little sad.
After the play Nathan gave a very nice compliment to the girl who played the Prince’s Steward about the way she delivered a particular line.
I cried a little bit during the play because I cry a little bit every time I see children do theater. I’m going to be a complete mess if Nathan and Sam are ever in a play. And Nathan has expressed interest.
